At an elevation of 6,520 feet, Mountainair is located at the summit of Abo Pass which links the Rio Grande Valley to the Estancia Valley via Highway 60. Expansive views of mountains and mesas surround the community, which is located 9 miles from the geographic center of New Mexico.
The terrain features principally pinon and juniper trees in rolling hills and grasslands,with ponderosa and various other conifers in nearby mountains. Wild life includes deer, elk, bear, antelope, wild turkey, coyote and mountain lion.
The area population is approximately 2500, with principal industry being ranching and farming.
Local services include a grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store, service station, restaurants and farming.
The town also provides a medical clinic, EMT, Police and Fire department.
